Autumn Term 2
We began this term with a mysterious egg appearing in the school playground – What an eggcellent week we all had! Then all of KS2 went of a trip to the National Coal Mining Musuem. We had a fantastic time and especially enjoyed going underground to experience being a miner! It was really scary when they turned the light off on us! At the end we all received a piece of coal and lots of us smeared the coal on our faces, even Miss Thomas! Also, Sally Fletcher led an interesting workshop and she shared her experiences of being a child working in the mines!
Back at school, we have really enjoyed continuing to learn about the mines during our Topic lessons. We have written a recount of the trip, researched the different types of jobs and animals and even created our own dramatic monologues about being a trapper and working down in the pit!
During English lessons, we have also been learning more about the mines. We took ourselves back to 1842 and pretended that we were all working hard underground in the mines. When suddenly we had an inspection from the Earl of Shaftesbury, who declared all the young children and women should go home immediately because of the dangerous, dirty working conditions. Look at our fantastic re-enactment of The Mines Act being declared in 1842.
After using drama to re-enact The Mines Act, we took on the role of being a journalist and wrote a newspaper report following this important historical event. Take a look at our inspired writing….
During maths, we have challenged ourselves by learning about fractions, money, division and measurement. We had lots of fun during our problem-solving and investigation activities! It really made us think hard. We also learnt that making mistakes is a good thing and we need to try and work out a systematic way of working.
During our measure topic, we made rocky road! We weighed out our ingredients and followed a recipe. It was delicious! We made so much, we were able to share it with the people at home!
After baking, we wrote our own set of instructions to make rocky road! Please take a look at our recipes.
We have also had lots of fun in the run up to Christmas! We have enjoyed our school Christmas fair, Christmas Jumper Day, going to the pantomime, making our Christmas cards and much more!
We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
Best wishes Miss Mayne, Mrs Lyons and Miss Thomas
